Radiometric Age Determinations in Indonesia: The State of the Art
The bulk of the results of radiometric age determinations of igneous and metamorphic rocks dates from the last decade and is closely related to the stepped-up activity in the field if mineral and hydrocarbon exploration in the country. The results obtained so far suggest a close correlation between the ages obtained and the ages of tectonic stages and metallegonic epochs which have been mainly based on paleontologyc studies and field observations. The practice of radiometric age determinations, moreover, seems to indicated that a further refinement of tectonic and one emplacement schemes is possible, and would thus represent a valuable exploration tool. At present, however, the data available is still to scattered, both in space and time, to warrant extrapolations of this nature. Although results of the fission-track method still suffer from basic inconsistencies, more effort should be put into this pracice, as it is the onlu tool available within the reach of a small research budget.
